📖 About the Solar Hijri Calendar
The Solar Hijri (Persian: هجری شمسی) is the official calendar of Iran and Afghanistan. It begins on the vernal equinox (Nowruz) and uses the same epoch as the Islamic Hijri calendar — the Prophet Muhammad's migration (Hijra) in 622 CE.
Unlike the Islamic Hijri calendar (which is lunar), the Solar Hijri is a solar calendar, meaning it stays aligned with the seasons. The first six months have 31 days each, the next five have 30 days, and the last month has 29 days (30 in leap years).
🎋 Haft-Sin (The Seven S's)
The central tradition of Nowruz is setting up a Haft-Sin table — seven items whose names begin with the Persian letter "S" (سین), each symbolizing a hope for the new year:
- Sabzeh (سبزه): Sprouts — rebirth & renewal
- Samanu (سمنو): Wheat pudding — affluence
- Senjed (سنجد): Dried lotus — love
- Seer (سیر): Garlic — medicine & health
- Seeb (سیب): Apple — beauty & health
- Somāq (سماق): Sumac — sunrise & patience
- Serkeh (سرکه): Vinegar — age & wisdom
