📖 About the Hijri Calendar

The Islamic calendar is a purely lunar calendar. Each month begins with the sighting of the crescent moon, making it about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian solar year. This causes Islamic holidays to shift approximately 11 days earlier each Gregorian year.

The calendar era begins with the year of the Hijra — the Prophet Muhammad's migration from Mecca to Medina, which corresponds to 622 CE. The current year 1448 AH corresponds to 2026–2027 CE.

🕌 The Four Sacred Months

In Islam, four months are considered sacred (Ashhur al-Hurum), during which fighting and conflict are traditionally forbidden:

  • Muharram (1st month)
  • Rajab (7th month)
  • Dhul-Qi'dah (11th month)
  • Dhul-Hijjah (12th month)

The month of Dhul-Hijjah is especially significant as it includes the Hajj pilgrimage and Eid al-Adha.
